Submission Terms & Rights Grant

These terms apply to any story, letter, essay, photograph, audio, or other
material (“Submission”) you send to Honest Conversations 757 through this
website, by email, or at an event. Please read them before submitting. By
submitting, you agree to them.

1. You must be 18 or older

Submissions are accepted only from people who are 18 years of age or older.
If you are under 18, please do not submit. A parent or legal guardian may
submit their own writing about their own experience.

2. You keep ownership of your work

You continue to own the copyright in your Submission. You are not selling or
assigning your work to us. What you are giving is a license, described below.

3. The license you grant

By submitting, you grant Lakisha Hinton-Williams and Honest Conversations 757
a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive, sublicensable
and transferable license to use, reproduce, edit, adapt, condense, translate,
excerpt, publish, distribute, publicly display, and publicly perform your
Submission, in whole or in part, in any media now known or later developed.

This includes, without limitation, use in:

  • current and future books, whether print, digital, or audio;
  • the Honest Conversations podcast and any related audio or video;
  • this website, social media, newsletters, and promotional materials;
  • live readings, workshops, symposiums, and speaking engagements;
  • course, workbook, and educational materials.

4. No compensation

You understand and agree that you will not receive payment, royalties, or any
other compensation for your Submission or for any use of it, now or in the
future. You are contributing your story voluntarily.

5. Editing

Submissions may be edited for length, clarity, grammar, and flow. Not every
Submission will be selected or published, and we are under no obligation to use
any Submission.

6. Credit and anonymity

You may choose to be credited by name, credited by first name only, or to
remain anonymous. Tell us your preference when you submit. If you choose
anonymity, we will not publish your name, but we may still describe you in
general terms (for example, “a mother in her fifties”).

7. Your promises to us

By submitting, you confirm that:

  • the Submission is your own original work;
  • you have the right to grant this license;
  • the Submission does not defame anyone or invade anyone’s privacy;
  • you have removed or changed identifying details of other people where
    publishing them would be unfair or harmful.

8. Writing about other people

Stories about family often involve people who did not choose to be written
about. Please consider changing names and identifying details of others in your
Submission. We may ask you to do so before publication.

9. Sensitive content

We welcome honest writing, including about difficult experiences. We are not
able to respond to Submissions as a counseling or crisis service. If you are in
distress, please reach out to a licensed professional or a crisis line in your
area.

10. Withdrawing a submission

You may ask us to withdraw an unpublished Submission at any time by emailing
us. Once a Submission has been published in a book or other released material,
it cannot be withdrawn from that material.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, without
regard to its conflict of laws rules.
